This project proposes an artificial life hybrid system that would add robotic prostheses to plants to help them photosynthesize.
POMONA stands for "Plant Optimization by Neural MechatrOnic Augmentation"
As the documentation explains, this rather tongue-in-cheek project is a reaction to the rush to grow corn for ethanol as a "green" fuel, which seems to be rather counterproductive.
POMONA was featured in my dorkbot talk of February 2008, and mentioned on an NPR programme the next day.
